If you crame all the volums together and add a little extra love you get the Movie! From what I get it doesn't continue the story, its a recap with a little bit more. Watch the series first.
You CAN watch the movie without every laying eyes on the series and still like it (infact one review I read said they loved the movie, didn't know there was a series, watched it and didn't like the series as much), it will just make more sense. Anyhow pick your own poison.
